〜Hakodate through my lens: Real stories, Real advice〜

New Faces of Hakodate Port: A Night Walk with the “HAKODATE” Object and Mashu Maru

When you think of Hakodate at night, the view from the mountain is a classic. But did you know the port area is now drawing fresh attention? In September 2025, a new symbol was born in the bay area. Let’s explore a special night-time walking route where old and new icons meet under the salty sea breeze.

1. September 2025: The New Landmark “HAKODATE” Object

The ultimate new photo spot, framing the silhouette of Mt. Hakodate through the glowing white letters.

A new photo spot has appeared at Hakodate Port that you simply can’t miss.

  • Did you know? This “HAKODATE” logo object was just installed last September.
  • The Best Part: What makes this object so special is the view—you can see Mt. Hakodate perfectly framed through the logo. The contrast between the pure white letters and the lights of the mountain summit captures the essence of modern Hakodate. Take a moment at the quiet night port to capture your own unique memory.

2. A Museum on the Sea: The “Mashu Maru” Memorial Ship

Where the new “HAKODATE” sign meets the historic Mashu Maru—a perfect collaboration of light at the bay.

Standing tall right next to the object is the Mashu Maru, the legendary ferry that once connected Hokkaido and Honshu.

  • The Hidden Story: Now preserved as a museum, it tells the story of the maritime history that fueled Hakodate’s growth.
  • The Best Part: The illuminated hull floating in the darkness creates a truly romantic atmosphere. The path leading from the object to the Mashu Maru feels like a luxurious time-travel route, letting you feel the spirit of the era when Hakodate was known as the “Gateway to the North.”
