HAKODATE Travel Tips

〜Hakodate through my lens: Real stories, Real advice〜

Welcome to Hakodate! Winter Illuminations and Essential Travel Tips at Hakodate Station

The moment you step out of Hakodate Station, a magical world of light awaits you. In this guide, I will share the latest updates on the station’s winter illuminations and crucial information on the local information centers to ensure your journey starts with 100% excitement and zero anxiety.

Part 1: The “Squid” Illumination Tunnel—A Symphony of Colors

Right in front of the station, you will find a magnificent light tunnel. Inspired by Hakodate’s famous “squid,” this unique structure lights up the winter night with a fantastic display.

A Drama of Three Colors

The tunnel changes its colors over time, offering different atmospheres for your photos:

  • Serene Light Blue: Reflecting the clear winter sky and the sea of Hakodate.
  • Romantic Pink: Adding a warm, festive glow to your arrival.
  • Mystical Deep Blue: Reminiscent of the deep waters of Hakodate Port at night.

Whichever color you encounter, it’s a perfect spot for your first “Hakodate photo.”

Part 2: Hakodate Station Bus Information Center (Look for the Blue Sign!)

After enjoying the lights, you’ll likely head to your hotel or the next sightseeing spot. Look for the building with the prominent blue sign next to the plaza—this is the Bus Information Center and Waiting Room.

What you can find here:
  • Route & Platform Guidance: Professional staff can help you find the most efficient bus route and the correct platform for your destination.
  • Warm Waiting Space: A clean, heated area where you can stay warm while waiting for your bus.
  • ⚠️ Crucial Note on Bus Tickets: Please be aware that paper tickets are no longer sold at the counter.Various bus passes are now available exclusively via smartphone (online purchase). I recommend setting up your mobile ticket in advance for a smooth boarding experience.
  • [Hours] 7:30 AM – 7:00 PM

Part 3: For Multi-Transport Advice, Visit the Tourist Information Center (Inside the Station)

If you need help with more than just buses—such as the City Tram, JR trains, or general sightseeing advice—I highly recommend the Tourist Information Center located inside the Hakodate Station building.

Why I Recommend It:

Located right next to the ticket gates, this center is staffed by experts in all modes of transportation.

  • Sightseeing Concierge: If you are unsure of your itinerary, they provide expert advice based on the latest local conditions.

Enjoy the magical lights and use these local tips to navigate our city with total confidence!
