Looking for a breathtaking spring escape? Head north to Mori Town. Just an hour’s drive from Hakodate, this town offers a stunning mix of century-old history and majestic volcanic views. Blooming typically from early to mid-May, it is the perfect follow-up to the blossoms in the city.
Part 1: A Century of History & Unique Species
The cherry blossoms in Mori Town have a legacy dating back to 1914. Unlike other spots, Mori is home to indigenous species found nowhere else on earth, such as the Mori-machi-zakura and the Aoba-shidare. Walking through these ancient groves feels like stepping into a living museum where history and nature converge.

Part 2: Two Parks with Distinct Charms
The experience is split between two adjacent parks, each offering a unique atmosphere.
• Aobagaoka Park (The Historic Sanctuary)
This park is home to over 1,000 trees, including gnarled, century-old giants. The low-hanging branches create intimate pink tunnels. Look up to see the delicate petals reaching for the brilliant Hokkaido blue sky—a perfect moment for your vertical photography.
• Oniushi Park (The Panoramic View)
Located next to the “You-Yu-Mori” roadside station, this park is famous for its grand scale. Head to the rooftop observatory to see a “carpet” of pink blossoms set against the dramatic, jagged peaks of Mt. Komagatake and the sparkling Uchiura Bay.

Part 3: Getting There — A Refreshing Drive
For the best experience, I highly recommend renting a car. The freedom allows you to stop and admire the scenery along the way.
- Duration: Approx. 1 hour from Hakodate city.
- The Route: Take Route 5 North. You’ll pass through the lush, volcanic forests of Onuma Park before reaching the coast.
- Pro Tip: Don’t forget to try the world-famous “Ika-meshi” (savory squid stuffed with rice) at the roadside station. It is a local soul food and the perfect snack for your hanami picnic!
Mori Town offers a perfect balance of peace and grandeur. If you want to experience a truly authentic Hokkaido spring beyond the usual tourist paths, this is the place to be.
