🌸 The Ultimate 2026 Guide to Southern Hokkaido’s Cherry Blossom Relay

Spring in Hokkaido begins in the south! While the entire region is stunning, the cherry blossoms bloom at slightly different times depending on the location. By knowing the order, you can extend your “Sakura Season” and enjoy the blossoms to the fullest.

With the 2026 forecast predicting blooms around April 24th for the Hakodate area, here are the four must-visit spots in the order they typically reach their peak.

1. Matsumae Park: The Starting Point of Hokkaido’s Spring

Matsumae is usually the first place in Hokkaido to welcome the cherry blossoms. With over 10,000 trees across 250 varieties, the park surrounding Matsumae Castle is a breathtaking sight. Because different varieties bloom at different times, you’re almost guaranteed a beautiful view whenever you visit during the season.

2. Hakodate Park: A Local Favorite with Retro Vibes

Within Hakodate City, Hakodate Park tends to reach full bloom slightly earlier than other spots. This historic park, established in the Meiji era, offers a nostalgic atmosphere. The combination of festive paper lanterns, night blossoms (Yozakura), and local food stalls creates a warm, community feel.

3. Goryokaku Park: The Iconic Star-Shaped Masterpiece

Home to the city’s official “sample tree,” Goryokaku is the heart of Hakodate’s spring. Approximately 1,500 Yoshino cherry trees transform this star-shaped fortress into a sea of pink. For the best experience, head up the Goryokaku Tower for a panoramic view you’ll never forget.

4. Mori Town: The Grand Finale

As the blossoms in Hakodate City begin to fall, the season is just reaching its peak in Mori Town, located about 45km north. With the majestic Mt. Komagatake in the background, parks like Oniushi and Aoba-ga-oka offer rare varieties and a peaceful, scenic end to your cherry blossom journey.

🌸 2026 Travel Planning Tip
