HAKODATE Travel Tips

〜Hakodate through my lens: Real stories, Real advice〜

The Best Comforting Shio Ramen Near Hakodate Station – Shinano

No trip to Hakodate is complete without a bowl of our signature Shio (Salt) Ramen. While there are many options near the station, there’s one local favorite I always recommend for its authentic atmosphere and soul-warming broth: Shinano.

1. A 1-Minute Walk from the Station: Look for the Red Curtain

Located just across the street from JR Hakodate Station, Shinano is impossible to miss thanks to its vibrant red “Noren” (curtain) and lanterns. Its prime location makes it the perfect spot for a quick meal before catching a train or right after checking into your hotel.

2. The Golden Broth: A Gentler Alternative to Ajisai

When you visit, you must try the classic Shio Ramen.

While “Ajisai” is the most famous brand in Hakodate for salt ramen, some people find its sharp, salty profile a bit intense. If you prefer a smoother, more delicate flavor, Shinano is for you. The clear, golden soup has a deep umami flavor that feels light and comforting—the kind of soup you’ll want to drink until the very last drop.

3. Late Night Snack? Take Out Fried Rice & Gyoza!

If the shop is crowded or you just want to relax in your room, take advantage of their takeout service for fried rice (Chahan) and Gyoza dumplings.

Their fried rice is perfectly fluffy and savory, making it an excellent late-night snack to enjoy back at your hotel. Pairing it with a local beer in the comfort of your room is a great way to end a day of sightseeing.

💡 Hotelier’s Critical Warning: Cash Only!

While many places in Japan are becoming digital-friendly, Shinano remains a traditional “old-school” shop.

They only accept CASH. Please make sure you have enough yen in your wallet before you sit down. There are ATMs inside Hakodate Station or at nearby convenience stores if you need to withdraw cash.

Enjoy every moment of your Hakodate journey, and travel safe!
