〜Hakodate through my lens: Real stories, Real advice〜

A Journey Back in Time: The Memorial Ship Mashu Maru

The exterior of the massive memorial ship Mashu Maru docked at Hakodate Harbor, featuring its signature white and blue two-tone hull, with a wooden pier in the foreground.

If you’re near Hakodate Station, you can’t miss the blue ship docked in the harbor. The Mashu Maru is a former Seikan Ferry turned into a unique floating museum. It’s a must-visit for history buffs and photography lovers.

1. Take the Captain’s Seat in the Wheelhouse

Inside the Wheelhouse (Bridge) of the Mashu Maru. A large wooden steering wheel is in the center, looking out through the windows at the clear blue waters of Hakodate Harbor and Mount Hakodate in the distance.

The highlight of the ship is the Wheelhouse (Bridge). You can actually step inside, touch the authentic navigation equipment, and sit in the captain’s chair. Looking out over Hakodate Bay from this perspective is an unforgettable experience.

2.Relive the Journey: Nostalgic Exhibits & Maritime Heritage

As you explore the ship, you’ll find fascinating artifacts that bring the history of the Seikan Ferry to life.

  • Rows of retro red fabric-covered double seats inside the Mashu Maru cabin, with blue sea visible through the windows.
  • Mannequins wearing various historical Seikan Ferry crew uniforms in navy and white on display.
  • A display case featuring a large orange lifebuoy, life jackets, firefighting suits, and other rescue equipment.
  • Original Passenger Seats: Sit in the actual seats used by travelers decades ago. You can almost feel the nostalgia and the excitement of the journey across the strait.
  • Uniforms & Emergency Gear: On display are the sharp uniforms worn by the crew, along with authentic rescue and emergency equipment. These items tell a story of the discipline and safety standards that protected every voyage.
  • Ship Models & Massive Anchors: Don’t miss the intricate scale models of the Mashu Maru. Seeing them alongside the actual massive anchors helps you appreciate the true scale of this engineering marvel.

3. Breathtaking Deck Views

Step out onto the deck for a 360-degree view of Hakodate. From the majestic Mount Hakodate to the modern Goryokaku Tower, the panoramic scenery combined with the salty sea breeze is pure bliss.

【Winter Notice】 From November to March, deck access may be restricted for safety reasons. But don’t worry! The wheelhouse and interior exhibits offer plenty to see, and watching the winter harbor from the warmth of the cabin is a beautiful experience in itself.

Summary: A Perfect “Gap Time” Spot with a View

The Mashu Maru is ideally located just a few minutes from JR Hakodate Station.

  • Morning Walk: Opening at 9:00 AM, it’s the perfect addition to a refreshing morning stroll after breakfast at the Morning Market.
  • Rainy Day Lifesaver: Since the exhibits are indoors, it’s a reliable “Plan B” when the weather in Hakodate takes a turn for the worse.
  • Before Your Train: Its proximity to the station makes it the best way to spend an extra hour before catching your train.

Convenient, weather-proof, and accessible from early morning—the Mashu Maru is a smart choice that fits perfectly into any travel itinerary.
