On March 20th, the cherry blossoms officially began blooming in Tokyo. For those of us in Hakodate, this news is the ultimate signal to start counting down until Goryokaku Park turns a beautiful shade of pink.
Today, I’ll be predicting the 2026 bloom date for Hakodate using two methods: the unique “30-Day Rule” and the well-known “600°C Rule.”
1. The Accelerating Cherry Blossom Front: 30–35 Days is the New Norm

In the past, the general rule of thumb was that Hakodate would bloom about 35 to 40 days after Tokyo. However, due to recent climate shifts, this gap is narrowing.
- 2010s: It typically took 35 to 40 days for the cherry blossom front to reach Hakodate from Tokyo.
- 2020s: We are seeing more cases where the gap is only 30 to 35 days.
In this modern era of faster-moving blossom fronts, “one month after Tokyo” is becoming the new standard for Hakodate.
2. Progress Toward the “600°C Rule” is Steady!
The “600°C Rule” is a reliable indicator for predicting blooms. It suggests that cherry blossoms will open once the sum of the daily maximum temperatures from February 1st onwards exceeds 600°C.
This year, Hakodate has seen very little snow since February, and since the start of March, we’ve had many days where the high temperature stayed above 5°C. Thanks to this mild weather, our “temperature savings” toward the 600°C goal are accumulating very smoothly.
3. Analyzing the 2026 Data: A Bloom Earlier Than April 23rd?
Let’s look at the current cumulative temperature for Hakodate as of March 20th:
- Current Cumulative Temperature: Approx. 260°C
- Last Year’s Increase (March 21 – April 23): Approx. 380°C
If temperatures rise at the same pace as last year, the calculation looks like this:
260°C (Current) + 380°C (Projected Increase) = 640°C
This comfortably clears the 600°C threshold. While the average predicted date is April 23rd, there is a strong possibility that we will see the official opening a few days earlier than expected!
Conclusion: Get Ready for an Early Spring in Hakodate

Between the “30-day gap” from Tokyo and our steady temperature accumulation, all signs point to an early bloom for Hakodate this year.
Whether the peak will hit before the Golden Week holidays or align perfectly with them—keep a close eye on the rising temperatures over the next month!
