[July Diary] 4 Local Insider Updates You Need to Know for Your July Hakodate Trip

Hello everyone! Summer in Hakodate is finally kicks into high gear. To ensure you have a safe and smooth journey, I have compiled 4 essential, real-time updates directly from the ground that every traveler visiting Hakodate this month (July) should keep in mind. Let’s dive in!

1. Temperature Rising: Watch Out for the Climate Gap in Japan!

Recently, the weather in Hakodate has been warming up nicely, with many days approaching 25°C. By late July, we expect some days to climb close to 30°C.

However, if you are traveling from or through Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka, you might be used to sweltering days well over 35°C. Please be careful with this sudden regional temperature gap—it is easy to catch a cold or feel fatigued. Make sure to choose your layers wisely and stay well-hydrated!

2. Summer Tradition: Major Crowds Around Station & Bay Area Due to Fireworks

July marks the start of Hakodate’s spectacular summer fireworks season. This year, the grand fireworks festivals are scheduled for the nights of Sunday, July 19th and Saturday, August 1st.

If you plan to stay in Hakodate on either of these nights, please be prepared for extreme crowds around JR Hakodate Station and the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse (Bay Area). Transportation might take significantly longer than usual, so we highly recommend booking your dinner spots early and leaving plenty of buffer time for travel.

3. Foodie Update: The Flying Squid (Surume Ika) Catch Status

It’s officially the season for Hakodate’s famous specialty, Surume Ika (flying squid)! However, recent news shows that the local catch has been lower than last year, breaking record lows.

You might wonder, “Does that mean I can’t eat fresh squid during my trip?” Don’t worry! Last year saw a very similar slow start when the fishing season opened in June. However, as temperatures rose through July and August, the supply gradually increased. We expect the same pattern this year, so get ready to enjoy some incredibly fresh squid on your visit!

4. Travel Safety: Being Prepared for Recent Earthquake Activities

Lately, earthquake activities ranging from seismic intensity 3 to 5 have been frequently reported across various regions in Japan. This might cause some anxiety, especially for first-time international visitors.

If you feel concerned about safety measures or what to do during an emergency in Japan, please read through my comprehensive guide that covers everything you need to know to travel with absolute peace of mind.
