Matsumae Cherry Blossoms: A Quick Guide to Hokkaido’s Spring Paradise

Matsumae Castle with pink cherry blossoms in full bloom

Experience the earliest cherry blossoms in Hokkaido at Matsumae, a historic castle town. With 10,000 trees across 250 varieties, it is a must-visit spring destination.

Part 1: A Month-Long Bloom

Matsumae Park offers a long blooming season from late April to late May. Thanks to the mix of early and late-blooming species, you can enjoy the stunning pink landscape for an entire month.

The Spirit of “Wabi-Sabi”: A Note on Etiquette

To truly enjoy the blossoms, please remember: Admire, but do not touch. Cherry branches are extremely delicate. In Japan, we find beauty in “Hakanasa” (ephemerality)—the natural cycle of flowers blooming and eventually falling.

  • Observe from a distance: Let the petals fall naturally with the wind.
  • Respect the life of the tree: This is the heart of “Wabi-Sabi.”

Please capture these fleeting moments through your lens rather than with your hands.

Part 2: Matsumae Castle & Photography

As Hokkaido’s only Japanese-style castle, Matsumae Castle provides a stunning contrast against the pink blossoms.

Pro Tip: Frame the castle through the cherry branches for a poetic, historical shot. A slow walk around the grounds is the best way to feel the town’s history.

Capturing the delicate balance between history and nature.

Part 3: Scenic Drive to Matsumae

I recommend renting a car for the 2-hour trip from Hakodate.

Route 228: This coastal road offers breathtaking views of the Tsugaru Strait. On clear days, you can see Aomori Prefecture across the sea. It is one of the most beautiful drives in Hokkaido.

Enjoy every moment of your Hakodate journey, and travel safe!
