Running Out of Cash? 3 Convenient Currency Exchange Spots Near Hakodate Station

While cashless payments are becoming more common in Japan, many local restaurants, small shops, and historical sites in Hakodate still remain “Cash Only.” If you find yourself short on Japanese Yen, don’t worry. Here are three reliable spots near Hakodate Station where you can find automated currency exchange machines that are easy to use and often available late at night.

1. Premier Hotel -CABIN- Hakodate (Lobby)

Located directly in front of JR Hakodate Station, this hotel lobby features an automated exchange machine that is accessible to non-guests. It is the most convenient spot if you have just arrived by train or bus and need cash immediately.

  • Address: 14-10 Wakamatsu-cho, Hakodate
  • Hours: 24 Hours (Inside the lobby)

2. Lawson Hakodate Asaichi (Inside)

This Lawson convenience store is located right next to the famous Hakodate Morning Market (Asaichi). If you realize you’ve run out of yen while browsing for fresh seafood breakfast, this is your closest option. Since it’s a convenience store, it’s accessible 24/7.

  • Address: 12-14 Wakamatsu-cho, Hakodate
  • Hours: 24 Hours

3. Hakodate Kaisen Ichiba (Main Store)

If you are sightseeing in the Bay Area, the machine inside Hakodate Kaisen Ichiba is very handy. It’s located near the “Ika-ika Tei” restaurant, making it easy to exchange some money before you dive into souvenir shopping or lunch.

  • Address: 12-12 Toyokawa-cho, Hakodate
  • Hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

💡 Hotelier’s Insider Tip

While there are banks around the station, they have limited hours and can sometimes involve a bit of a language barrier. These automated machines are much faster, support multiple languages, and are available when banks are closed.

I often direct my guests to Lawson or Premier Hotel -CABIN- for late-night emergencies. Having a little bit of cash ready will make your Hakodate trip much smoother and stress-free!

Enjoy every moment of your Hakodate journey, and travel safe!
