HAKODATE Travel Tips

〜Hakodate through my lens: Real stories, Real advice〜

Next to the Red Brick Warehouses! Enjoy Fresh Hakodate Seafood in a Cozy, Relaxing Space at “Hokutobo”

Hello everyone! In my previous post, I introduced the incredibly popular seafood Izakaya “Kaikobo” near Hakodate Station. Today, I am thrilled to share its wonderful, lesser-known sister restaurant: “Hokutobo” (北斗房).

Unlike Kaikobo, which is right by the station, Hokutobo is located just steps away from one of Hakodate’s most iconic sightseeing spots: the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses.

If you are exploring the beautiful slopes of Motomachi or shopping along the bay area and thinking, “I want to stay right here and have an amazing seafood dinner to end my day,” this is the absolute perfect spot. As a local hotel professional, I highly recommend adding this hidden gem to your sightseeing itinerary!

1. Seconds from the Red Brick Warehouses: A Cozy Hideaway for Adults

Exterior

Hokutobo is situated in the heart of the scenic bay area. It features a modern, elegant Japanese-style exterior, complete with a bright, welcoming sign showcasing Hakodate’s famous “Live Squid” (Katsu-Ika).

While Kaikobo near the station is known for its high-energy, bustling market-like crowd, Hokutobo offers a completely different vibe. The interior is chic, calm, and sophisticated, featuring private dining booths and spacious seating. It is the ideal place to unwind, rest your legs after a long day of walking, and enjoy a quiet, premium dinner.

2. From Japanese Tradition to Modern Twists: Must-Try Dishes

Directly managed by a seafood wholesaler, Hokutobo serves top-tier, incredibly fresh seafood. What makes this place unique is how they blend traditional flavors with creative, modern twists. Here are three spectacular dishes that I tried and highly recommend to our global guests:

🦑 The Squid Shiokara Trio

Shiokara Trio

If you want to experience authentic Japanese Otsumami (tapas/pub snack) culture, start with this! This dish lets you sample Hakodate’s famous local squid as Shiokara (salted, fermented squid) prepared in three unique seasonings. Served in colorful, elegant ceramic bowls, it is a beautiful presentation. For the adventurous foodies looking to try deep, authentic Japanese flavors, this is a must-order!

🦀 Premium Crab Served in the Shell

Crab in Shell

This dish is an absolute showstopper the moment it hits the table. Using a real crab shell as a dish, it is packed to the brim with sweet, juicy shredded crab meat. It is topped with a generous portion of brilliant Tobiko (flying fish roe) for a wonderful, crunchy texture. Dipped in their special savory broth, this is a luxurious delicacy you can only fully appreciate here in Hokkaido.

🍝 Mentaiko & Squid Hot Stone Pasta

Hot Stone Pasta

After a long day of walking around the city, sometimes you crave a warm, filling carb dish. Hokutobo’s signature creative pasta completely hits the spot. Served sizzling hot in a heavy stone bowl, the pasta is tossed in a rich, savory Mentaiko(spicy cod roe) sauce and topped with tender local squid, seaweed, and green onions. It comes with a side of special crab soup—you pour the soup into the hot stone bowl and mix it all together to your liking. It stays piping hot until the very last bite!

3. Why International Travelers Love Hokutobo

Despite being right in the main tourist district, Hokutobo provides a highly accessible environment for global visitors:

  1. Friendly Picture Menus: Even if you cannot read Japanese, the menu features clear photographs, making it incredibly easy to order simply by pointing.
  2. A Relaxing, Semi-Private Space: With counter seats and private booths, it is highly praised by guests who prefer a peaceful, intimate dinner away from the loud, crowded tourist spots.

⚠️ Local Pro-Tip from a Hotel Worker

Because Hokutobo is located so close to the Red Brick Warehouses, it is incredibly easy to fit into your daily travel schedule. Here is a insider secret: if you find out that the station-side Kaikobo is completely fully booked for the night, do not give up! Ask your hotel front desk staff to check the availability at Hokutobo instead. It is a fantastic alternative that lets you experience the same world-class seafood quality while enjoying a beautiful night out in the bay area.

Conclusion

While experiencing the high energy of the station area is fantastic, taking your time to savor creative seafood dishes at Hokutobo after exploring the historic warehouses is truly special. Make sure to add this destination to your Hakodate dinner options!

Enjoy every moment of your Hakodate journey, and travel safe!
