Introduction Due to heavy rainfall causing debris flow on the tracks, JR Hokkaido has suspended all Limited Express “Hokuto” trains connecting Hakodate and Sapporo until at least September 2nd. For those currently traveling in Hokkaido or planning to travel between Hakodate and Sapporo, here is a breakdown of alternative transportation options and key travel tips.

3 Alternative Transportation Options Between Hakodate and Sapporo

• Rental Car (Best Balance for Groups)
  • Travel Time: Approximately 4 to 5 hours
  • Highlights: While rates vary depending on the vehicle and rental conditions, renting a car is often cheaper than buying two tickets for the Limited Express “Hokuto.” It is an ideal choice for group travelers looking for flexibility.
• Flight (Fastest Option)
  • Travel Time: Approximately 1 hour (flight time)
  • Routes: Hakodate – Sapporo (Okadama), Hakodate – New Chitose
  • Highlights: Several flights operate daily. While it is the most expensive alternative, it is the best way to minimize travel time.
• Highway Bus (Most Budget-Friendly)
  • Travel Time: Approximately 5 hours
  • Highlights: This is the cheapest way to travel between the two cities. However, seat capacity is limited, so buses are likely to sell out quickly during train suspensions.

Why We Do Not Recommend the JR and Replacement Bus Combination

Currently, the section between Datemombetsu and Oshamambe is closed, with JR Hokkaido operating replacement buses for this portion.

Traveling from Sapporo to Hakodate requires multiple transfers: “Sapporo to Datemombetsu (Train) ➔ Datemombetsu to Oshamambe (Replacement Bus) ➔ Oshamambe to Hakodate (Train).” Due to frequent delays, long waiting times, and heavy luggage handling, the total travel time will be exceptionally long, making it impractical for tourists.

From the Sapporo side, trains are still running to Noboribetsu (famous for hot springs and the Bear Park) and Shiraoi(home to Upopoy – National Ainu Museum and Park). Adjusting your itinerary to explore these destinations instead of pushing through to Hakodate is a practical alternative.
