[September Diary] Looking Back at August & 3 Highlights for Your Early Autumn Trip to Hakodate

Hello everyone! August went by in a flash, and a crisp, pleasant autumn breeze is already beginning to settle across Hakodate.

Looking back, August 2026 was remarkably comfortable compared to last year’s record-breaking summer heat, with only a handful of days reaching 30°C in Hakodate. While a couple of days brought heavy rain, there was no major disruption across the city, and our streets bustled with international and domestic travelers enjoying their summer holidays.

Heading into September, Southern Hokkaido is packed with high-energy sports, long holiday crowds, and seasonal food festivals. Here are three essential local topics directly from the ground to help you plan a smooth trip this month!

1. IRONMAN South Hokkaido: Massive Triathlon in Neighboring Towns (Sep 13)

On Sunday, September 13th, the international endurance event “IRONMAN South Hokkaido” takes place across Hokuto City and Kikonai Town, located right next to Hakodate.

Now in its third edition, this challenging race pushes athletes through a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, and a 42.195 km full marathon run within the cut-off time (06:30–24:00). Every year, top contenders and enthusiasts from across the globe gather here, filling the entire southern region with vibrant sporting spirit.

  • Traveler Caution (Road Closures): The race course uses both public roads and the local expressway (Hakodate-Esashi Expressway). If you plan to drive a rental car or take a taxi toward Kikonai, Shiriuchi, or Matsumae on this day, expect extensive traffic regulations. Check local detour maps in advance and plan your driving route with extra buffer time.

2. “Silver Week” Long Weekend: Crowds, Typhoons, and Weather Shifts (Sep 18–23)

Following May’s Golden Week, Japan celebrates another major string of public holidays in September called “Silver Week.”

In 2026, the calendar falls favorably into a massive holiday stretch from Friday, September 18th to Wednesday, September 23rd. Expect heavy passenger volumes at JR Hakodate Station, bullet train connections, popular sightseeing spots, and hotels throughout the region.

  • Typhoon Season & Flight Disruptions: While the harsh summer heat subsides, September falls in peak typhoon season across East Asia. Approaching storms can cause sudden flight cancellations or train suspensions. Keep a close eye on real-time transit alerts.
  • Regional Temperature Gaps: Across Hokkaido, daytime highs will sit comfortably between 20°C and 25°C, but early mornings and late evenings get distinctly chilly. If you are arriving from Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka where summer heat often lingers near 30°C, bring a light outer jacket or cardigan so the sharp climate change doesn’t catch you off guard.

3. Seasonal Flavors at Hakodate Station: Gourmet Wonder Park (Sep 26–27)

To close out September, don’t miss the annual autumn open-air culinary showcase running on Saturday, September 26th and Sunday, September 27th!

Held in the open plazas right next to JR Hakodate Station and the Daimon district, local restaurants and producers from across Southern Hokkaido set up vibrant food stalls. From fresh grilled seafood and juicy regional meats to seasonal autumn farm produce, it is the best single-stop tasting experience in town.

  • Hours: 10:00 – 17:00 (Closes at 16:00 on the final day, Sep 27)
  • Access: Short walk from JR Hakodate Station

Because it’s held steps from the station concourse, drop by between sightseeing strolls or right before checking in to grab some hot local street food!

Clear skies, rich autumn seafood, and thrilling local events make September an exceptional window to experience Hakodate. Keep these road regulations and temperature swings in mind, and enjoy your early autumn journey!
